Asking for access

Ask for one permission or one matter for a fixed period, follow the decision and end access when you no longer need it.

Ask for what you need

Open Me, Access, and choose Request access. The same action appears when a page or action needs a permission you do not hold.

  1. Choose one permission by its name, or one matter. A role change belongs in Approvals, Permission requests.
  2. For a permission, choose the scope it should reach. Office and practice area are separate scopes; neither includes the other. There is no department scope.
  3. Choose the first and last dates and give a reason. An end date is always required.
  4. Submit the request. My requests shows what you asked for and where it stands. Open a row to read the reason and decision in full.

The firm's maximum period starts at 30 days. Waiting requests lapse after seven days by default. These rules are maintained under Settings, General, Security. Changing a rule does not rewrite a request's recorded deadline.

Who decides

A request for one matter goes first to its responsible partner. After two working days, other eligible approvers may decide it. A permission request goes to somebody who may decide access and holds that permission at the requested scope or wider.

Nobody decides their own request. An approver may shorten the dates or narrow the scope, but cannot widen what was asked or grant more than they hold. A rejection carries a reason that you can read on the request.

What approval does

A permission request gives a temporary permission override. Where an override already exists, the request is refused and names the existing change. Use the permission change workflow to resolve it first; a request never replaces another grant or denial silently.

A matter request puts you on its team as Temporary access until the approved end date. Its Team tab and your person record's Access tab show the period. Future access begins on its first date.

End it early or let it expire

You can withdraw your own waiting request with a reason. Somebody who may decide access can revoke approved access early, also with a reason. Revoking takes effect immediately and keeps the request's history.

The daily job tells you a day before access ends and on its final day. It ends the grant once the approved period has passed and marks the request Expired. Notifications link back to the request.
